CLASS DESCRIPTIONS

 

CHILDREN'S CLASSES

 

PARENT & TOT – Ages 16 months to 3.5 year

This class is designed to introduce your child into the world of dance and music. This class is perfect for children who have not yet become comfortable with separating from their parents.  This program focuses on music recognition, rhythm, and learning to follow instructions given by an instructor.  Different instruments and props are used during this class to increase fine and gross motor skills.  Basic building blocks of dance are introduced through creative movements, stories, and nursery rhymes to encourage children to use their imaginations. Each exercise has a specific purpose to help to develop their muscles and co-ordination for future, more challenging dance steps. As your child progresses through the program you will notice them begin using movements that they learned in in class in their daily life.

MUSICAL MOVEMENT – Ages 2 to 4 years

This  class is perfect for the little dancer who is ready to attend class on their own. This class focuses on basic dance steps, music recognition, rhythm and motor skills using fun music and props. This class prepares any child for any classroom that they may be entering in the future. Skills such as working with the group and listening to directions are focused on.

INTRO TO DANCE – Ages 3&4 years

These classes provide the foundation for dance with a lively and fun approach. Basic building blocks of dance are introduced through creative movements, stories, and nursery rhymes to encourage children to use their imaginations. Each exercise has a specific purpose to help to develop their muscles and co-ordination for future, more challenging dance steps.

PRE-BALLET – 4 years

This class continues on the foundations set in Intro To Dance. Children continue to work on the building blocks but begin to move towards the principles of a more formal ballet class. The focus of this class it to ensure students understand the process of a dance class and are able to begin to move more quickly while ensuring technique covered in Intro To Dance still remains. Creative movement & fun are still the focus of this class.

PRE-PRIMARY 1 (PP1) – Students entering Kindergarten this fall

The Pre-Primary (PP1) class is designed to continue building on concepts introduced in Pre-Ballet. The skills that they are learning in this class will assist them in whatever dance form they should choose in the future. We incorporate themes that will interest your child while teaching them the fundamentals of dance in a fun and creative way.

PRE-PRIMARY 2 (PP2) – 5&6 years

The Pre-Primary (PP2) class is designed to continue building on concepts introduced in Pre-Primary 1. Ensuring a solid foundation has been built is extremely important to us as we believe it ensures your child is safe and creates a dancer who is able to move into any form of dance in the future with a seamless transition. The work covered in PP2 focuses on ensuring students are able to string the steps learned in PP1 together in simple short combinations while keeping time to music and maintaining technique.

PRIMARY A&B – 6-8 years

The Primary class is designed to continue building on concepts introduced in Pre-Primary. The concepts in Pre-Primary are perfected to ensure solid foundation is achieved prior to moving on to the Grade levels in ballet. Primary is considered the transitional grade into formal ballet. GRADE 1&2

Grade 1 is a big step in a dancer’s life.  Students in Gr. 1 are starting to learn steps that they will be using for the remainder of their years spent in ballet. Students often feel as they are now “big girls” as they move into a more formal dance setting. Students enrolled in their second year in Gr 1 ballet should consider enrolling in 2 ballet classes per week. The first class would be Gr 1 ballet and the second class would be Ballet Gr 1/2 .

TECHNIQUE 1 & 2

New to Adagé this year is Technique 1&2. These classes were developed to assist students in developing solid technique. Students will work on proper placement, core strength, flexibility, balance & increasing turnout. Adagé staff members will be working together to teach the class & each instructor will focus on a new concept throughout the year while still focusing on the foundations of dance. The idea behind this class is to ensure that throughout the year extra care and attention is being taken to produce the best & safest dance environment for your child. This class is highly recommended to all children in Gr 3 Ballet &/or Jazz 4 and higher.

Gr 2 and 3

Students enrolled in Gr 2 Ballet & up are highly recommended to enroll in 2 ballet classes per week. This year we have developed a new class called Technique 1. This class would be considered a second class of ballet per week. This class will focus on the technical fundamentals of ballet and will ensure a solid foundation is being built. The technique class will be a non-performance class which will allow students to continue working on class work for the entire year as opposed to switching gears and moving into their dance. Large discounts are offered to students who choose to enroll in Technique 1 who are already taking 3 or more hours per week at the studio.

Gr 4 & up

Students enrolled in Gr 4 or up must enroll in 2 or more ballet classes per week. Students must also take Technique 2. Large discounts are offered to students who choose to enroll in Technique 2 who are already taking 3 or more hours per week at the studio.

TEEN BALLET 1/2

The Teen Ballet Program was developed to introduce students new to ballet the fundamental concepts that will assist them in any form of dance they wish to pursue. Students will learn foundations of technical dance which will assist them in their other classes and/or allow them to join a more formal ballet class.

TEEN BALLET 3/4

Teen Ballet 3/4 was developed for those students who have mastered the basic fundamentals of ballet and are ready to move towards a more focused ballet program. This class is also a great option for students transitioning into the Senior Ballet program. 

SR. COMPANY – 15 YEARS +

This new group has been developed to allow students to work solely on learning choreography. This group will have more performance opportunities throughout the year and may have extra rehearsal times scheduled for Friday afternoons. Students must be enrolled in at least 3 classes and one must be at least Gr 4 ballet. This groups will be travelling to Disneyland in the Spring of 2013 & 2016

JR. COMPANY – 11 YEARS + - Coming Fall of 2013

This new group has been developed to allow students to work solely on learning choreography. This group will have more performance opportunities throughout the year and may have extra rehearsal times scheduled for Friday afternoons. Students must be enrolled in at least 2 classes and one must be at least Gr 3 ballet. This groups will be travelling to Disneyland in the Spring 2016 and will be performing at local events throughout the community.

JAZZ

JAZZ 1 A/B

Jazz 1A is designed as an introduction to Jazz while still covering the basics of dance. Emphasis is given on developing proper technique so that students have a strong foundation that will allow them to expand into other areas of dance. A strong sense of rhythm is also extremely important during this stage of class development.

JAZZ 2 AND 3

Jazz 2 and 3 are designed as the next step into a more formal Jazz class while still covering the basics of dance. Emphasis is given on developing proper technique so that students are have  a strong foundation that will allow them to expand into other areas of dance as well as provide them with a solid basis for entry into Jazz 4.

JAZZ 4 & UP

These upper level classes will be working on how to blend movements from choreographed step to step.  Increased difficulty, independence & speed will be a focal point

MODERN

MODERN 1 – Must be enrolled in Gr 3 and/or 4 Ballet or Teen Ballet 3

Modern 1 is our first level of modern dance and provides an introduction of concepts followed in modern dance.  Modern dance is a more relaxed, free style of dance. It uses emotions and moods to design steps. It has a deliberate use of gravity, while still focusing on the fundamentals of ballet.

MODERN 2 – Must be enrolled in Gr 5 Ballet  or with permission of instructor

Modern 2 is a continuation of the fundamentals established in Modern 1

TEEN MODERN  Must be enrolled in Teen Ballet or Gr 3/4 Ballet

Teen Modern equivalent to Modern 1

TAP

TAP 1 – Ages 5-7 Yrs

Tap 1 is designed to introduce the basic terminology and movements of tap. Combinations of basic steps are also introduced, creating new patterns and rhythms. Travelling steps are introduced, enabling students to work across the room one at a time giving one on one time with teacher and student.

TAP 2 – Ages 7-8 Yrs

Tap 2 is designed to introduce the basic terminology and movements of tap. Steps learned in Tap 1 are reviewed and introduced at a faster speed. Combinations of basic steps are also introduced creating new patterns and rhythms. Travelling steps are introduced enabling students to work across the room one at a time giving one on one time with teacher and student.

 TAP 3 – Ages 8-10 Yrs

Tap 3 will be a continuation of Tap 2 but more attention will be paid to details. Increased difficulty, independence & speed will be a focal point of Tap 3. There will also be more of an emphasis put on creating new sounds from old steps. At the end of the year your child will be a tap, scuff and peri-diddle away from being a star!

HIP HOP

HIP HOP 1 – Ages 6-8 Yrs

Hip Hop 1 is designed to introduce your child to the world of Hip Hop while introducing the basics of dance. For children to properly understand the feeling of dancing into the ground it is imperative that proper attire is worn to all classes. (Sweatpants, Baggy T-shirts, Hoodies, Runners…..Please no jeans, bare feet, dress shoes, tank tops)

HIP HOP 2 – Ages 9-11 Yrs

Continuation of the fundamentals of Hip Hop 2

HIP HOP 3A – Ages 12-14 Yrs

For students new to hip hop with little or no experience

HIP HOP 3B – Ages 12-14 Yrs

For students with pervious Hip Hop experience

HIP HOP 4 – Ages 15 Yrs & up

Continuation of the fundamentals of Hip Hop 4

MUSICAL THEATRE

MUSICAL THEATRE 1-3 - Ages 6 - 13 years

This class combines classical vocal training, dancing & acting into one fun class.  This is a great introduction class to those who wish to join our acting program in the future. Children in Musical Theatre 1 must also be enrolled in ballet.

ACTING - Ages 12 years & up

This class provides an introduction to public speaking and characterization. Students will learn the skills they need to take on different characters through voice. movement & expression. Students registered in this class will need to comitt to extra rehearsals. All rehearsals are mandatory. Rehearsal times will be either before or after scheduled Acting class with occasional rehearsals being called on Fridays or Saturdays
